How to Make Your Make-up Last All Day

Today’s video is all about making your make-up last. If you find that half way through the day your foundation has disappeared, or it separates in key areas, this is the video for you.

Here are a few key points that we touch on:

  • Using hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin, eliminating the risk of patchy make-up
  • Using a skincare/primer hybrid to prep your skin
  • Applying more product in key areas when you apply your foundation
  • How to use powder to seal everything in place
  • Application techniques to build coverage
  • The benefits of setting spray
  • Learning how your behaviours may impact your make-up!

How To Make Your Make-up Last All Day

Despite being met with shock and horror whenever I admit to this, I’m really not sold on facial primers. In fact, I hardly ever use them (unless they’re illuminating, in which case I’m all over it). So for me, here are 5 things that keep my face looking fresh all day long.

1. Apply a lot of product. (It sounds obvious but it’s true!)
Wearing a generous amount of your chosen product is one of the best ways to ensure that it is going to stay on. This doesn’t necessarily mean looking fully made up; find products that match your desired level of coverage, then wear a lot of them. For example, a rich layer of tinted moisturiser will give you a fresh finish but stay on much longer than a light layer of a full coverage foundation.

Invest in: Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser for a light coverage, NARS Sheer Glow Foundation for a medium coverage and Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation for a full coverage.

2. Use an eye primer or a crease-resistant base.
So many women, myself included, gather oil on the eyelids as the day goes on. This means either that your eyeshadow is going to crease or that your mascara is going to bleed onto both the brow bone and the lower lash line. Use an eyeshadow primer – Urban Decay’s are brilliant – or crease-resistant bases – Laura Mercier’s Caviar Sticks are amazing – and your eyes won’t budge all day.

Invest in: Urban Decay Original Primer PotionLaura Mercier Caviar Sticks and Charlotte Tilbury Colour Chameleon Pencils.

3. Seal it all in with a powder.
Powder doesn’t necessarily equate to a chalky, dry skin finish. Lots of modern powders manage to keep a dewy, fresh glow to the skin but seal everything in as they work. Be sure to powder the t-zone to ensure that everything stays in place all day, but leave the cheeks bare so that your skin still looks fresh.

Invest in: Urban Decay Ultra Definition Naked Skin Powder, Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder or Laura Mercier Powder Foundation for a heavy-duty seal in.

4. Apply a lip liner all over the lips.
Using a neutral lip liner all over the lips gives your lipstick something extra to hug onto. Apply it all over the lip and cover with a matte lipstick for a long-lasting finish. Illamasqua lipsticks will not move all day, nor will the Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Lipsticks.

Invest in: Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk and MAC Cosmetics Lip Liner in Soar, Spice or Stripdown.

5. Keep your skin hydrated.
The easiest way to achieve brilliant make-up is to take time to look after your skin. Dry patches, in particular, are going to equate to a patchy base that doesn’t last the day. Use a great cleanser and a great moisturiser as a minimum and keep to a meticulous regime. Be sure to drink as much fresh water as you can, too. If you aren’t currently doing this you’ll be surprised at how quickly it makes a difference when you do!

Invest in: RMK Cleansing Balm and Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturiser.

Follow these tips and you’ll find that your face is as fresh by the end of the day as the moment you left the house. Enjoy!
