Bobbi Brown Gift Giving Collection 2015

This year, her packaging is luxury and her offering is something brighter and pinker, still as luxurious but a fresh take on the festive season.

Deluxe Eye and Cheek Palette – Limited Edition, £59
Bobbi’s luxury palettes are amazing value for money when you compare them to the price of buying each item individually.

Bobbi Brown Gift Giving Collection 2015 6

Comprising eight eyeshadow shades, you have everything that you need to create a soft smoky eye right up to a very dark look. The shades strike the perfect balance of neutral mattes, some shimmer and glitter shades for evening, and even a jet black which doubles up as a great liner.

Bobbi Brown Gift Giving Collection 2015 7

And unlike last year, this palette contains two blusher shades rather than lipsticks. Now I absolutely loved last year’s palette, but I feel like the blusher shades are going to be really well received because it is so much easier to keep a palette of powders clean rather than trying to avoid any flyaway pigment spilling into the lip shades. Repackaged in a classic black glossy case with a raised Bobbi logo, this is total luxury and neutral enough for women of all ages and skin tones to enjoy.

Bobbi Brown Gift Giving Collection 2015 5

Pink Shimmer Brick – Limited Edition, £35
I know that there is already a permanent pink Shimmer Brick in the line up, but this limited edition is so much pearlier. It’s beautiful. A light, oyster sheen, this is going to be lovely used alone as an illuminator or even better buffed into your blusher to give it some iridescence. Without a doubt this is the shining star for me.

Bobbi Brown Gift Giving Collection 2015 4

Art Stick Trio – Limited Edition, £42
Have you tried the Bobbi Brown Art Sticks before? They’re not like any other chunky sticks in the beauty hall. These are essentially lipstick in a chunky pencil form, giving a really full coverage and that creamy, rich finish. Harlow Red is one of their best sellers, a universally flattering red, and Electric Pink isn’t as scary as it sounds, making eyes pop and lips look full. But the real stand out shade from the bunch is Brown Berry, the perfect rosy nude.

Bobbi Brown Gift Giving Collection 2015 3

A few months ago Amy Conway from the Bobbi Brown Pro Team was in Birmingham and she showed me this stick. I posted it to Instagram and I got so many comments and people asking me when it was going to launch – it is just one of those shades that looks prim and lovely on everyone. Be sure to keep an eye for Amy at your local Bobbi. She tours the country and she is completely brilliant. I learn something new every time I see her.

Luxe Lip Colours, £22.50
Now these aren’t actually part of the Christmas collection but they’re new from Bobbi and they’re going to make the most beautiful stocking fillers. The Luxe Lip collection is a brand new range of lipstick shades, creamy, rich and housed in a heavy gold packaging. They feel really luxury and expensive, very vintage like lipstick from past times.

Bobbi Brown Gift Giving Collection 2015 2

The lid is embossed with the new Bobbi logo. Available in 30 shades with 6 exclusive to Selfridges, your go-to colours are Bright Peony, Downton Plum and Your Majesty (because Bobbi loves the Queen).

Bobbi Brown Gift Giving Collection 2015 1

Don’t forget that what Bobbi Brown does best is make-up lessons. They don’t want you to take anything away without feeling confident and empowered to use it. When you treat your special someone this Christmas, book them in for a make-up lesson too.

Bobbi Brown’s Gift Giving Collection will be available from October 15th.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Scotty and I tend to gravitate towards the same scents so I always ask him to show me anything new that he loves. He wears a lot of niche fragrances and introduced me to Maison Francis Kurkdjian which has come to be one of my favourite brands.

What I love about MFK is that I never pick anything up and feel that it reminds me of anything else. Even their rosiest fragrance (which I will come onto in a moment) seems somehow different to the masses of others in the beauty hall. The whole brand embodies a fusion of many artistic influences; here’s how they describe themselves:

“Maison Francis Kurkdjian is a house of fragrance, but also a house of creation. It surrounds itself with the talent of designers, craftsmen, photographers, musicians and set designers. Exceptional know-how come together and echo off each other. They are fundamental to the House and are gradually writing a number of exceptional human adventures, in which perfume is, naturally, the hero.”

Here are two of my favourites for him and for her.

For him: Amyris Homme

A very clean, subtle fragrance, this is sophisticated and elegant without being too overpowering.

The key notes are Jamaican Amyris and Florentine Iris, weaving in Sicilian Mandarin, Moroccan Rosemary and a hint of Brazilian Tonka Bean.

Anyone who tends to like citrus fragrance will enjoy this, I’m sure. Amyris comes in a variation for men and women but personally I tend to prefer the Amyris for him, even on myself.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Amyris Homme

For her: A la Rose

A rich take on rose, this is feminine without being too sickly sweet. There is something quite sexy about it which isn’t what I would normally associate with such a clean, powdery flower.

A la Rose MFK

Top notes: Bulgarian Damascena Rose, Calabrian Bergamot, Californian Orange
Heart notes: Violet accord, Magnolia Blossom
Base notes: woody Cedar, Musk, Centifolia Rose from Grasse

A la Rose Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Maison Francis Kurkdjian is available at Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and Liberty of London. With Christmas around the corner keep them in mind as a gift idea for the person who has everything and wants something a little different.

Charlotte Tilbury Mini Miracle Eye Wand

I wrote about Christmas and her Magic Foundation straight away, but I wanted to really take my time with the Mini Miracle Eye Wand and ensure that it was amazing before I wrote about it.

I’ve taken my time. It’s amazing.

Charlotte Tilbury Mini Miracle Eye Wand 3

Let’s start with the fact that Charlotte’s wand is a world first in that it has a brush on two ends. Step 1 contains a Hydrating and Lifting Eye Cream, and Step 2 the Illuminate Under-Eye Light Reflector (concealer). Both are released with a quick twist and click, then applied using their respective brushes. As with all of her products it’s just so quick and easy. You don’t even need to pat anything in with your finger, let alone carry an additional brush.

Charlotte Tilbury Mini Miracle Eye Wand 5

Here’s how it works…

Step 1: Hydrating and Lifting Eye Cream

  • Can be used twice per day
  • Contains hyaluronic acid, plumping the skin and great for keeping skin hydrated therefore no drying, clumpy concealer
  • Bio Extract of Salicornia to reduce loss of water, again keeping everything fresh and dewy
  • Acanthium promotes cellular repair
  • Cyclodextrins to lift the eye dome
  • Rice Proteins to reduce bags, fighting ageing and fatigue

What’s great about this cream is that it slightly tightens when you apply it, really firming the eye area and keeping everything in place. It’s a bit like a pair of spanx for the eyes. If you haven’t had a lot of sleep, this helps to sculpt you back to normality.

Charlotte Tilbury Mini Miracle Eye Wand 2

Step 2: Illuminate Under-Eye Light Reflector

I really, really get on well with this. Sometimes I find that concealers with lots of coverage are heavy and ageing, but lighter concealers don’t do enough to colour correct. This strikes a perfect balance of the two, offering instant colour correction and evening out the skin tone but with a light, dewy consistency.

  • “A million lights” light-reflecting micro-particles to diffuse light
  • Mother of Pearl to add radiance
  • Polypeptides to minimise dark circles over time
  • Silky elastomers to smooth over wrinkles

Charlotte describes this as part of her ‘treat and transform’ range of skincare and make-up hybrids, designed to ease the appearance of fatigued eyes over time and brighten them instantly.

Charlotte Tilbury Mini Miracle Eye Wand 1

If you’re yet to find a concealer to take away bags without sitting in your lines, look no further. This is it.

Charlotte’s Mini Miracle Eye Wand is available in 5 shades and will be £29 available from October.

Lovebox with Collection

We started the day with champagne breakfast at London Grind to hear all about the new professional inspired range from Collection.

Collection Lovebox London Grind

I think that the everyday make-up lover is really starting to adapt more pro make-up artist techniques now that we have so much access to tips and tricks on social media. This in mind, Collection have created a more professional inspired range for launch this summer. What’s great about these is the fact that they allow the everyday make-up lover to explore and experiment with pro techniques without having to spend a fortune. The new collection is ideal for a younger girl, each item emblazoned with hashtags to encourage sharing their thoughts on social media.

ME and Dani

Blush and Glow Palette

I posted a photo of this to Instagram and someone commented that it looks more premium than high street. I totally agree. An ideal base quad, this features four shades: a bronze and illuminator to contour, a dusky terracotta for a natural blush and a bright pink for a flush. I wore this on the day and it lasted through the heat, photographing really well too.

Collection Blush and Glow Palette

Contour Kit Highlight and Sculpt

If blusher isn’t your thing, you’ll prefer the simple Contour Kit for adding shape and definition to your face. The pans are larger in this than the bronzer and illuminator in the Blush and Glow Palette.

Collection Contour Kit

Conceal and Light Like a Pro

Any budding make-up artists will really love this palette. With 8 colour correcting cream pigments, you can create a completely flawless base and really play with contouring. Alongside some classic skin shades there are also yellow, lilac and mint pigments to correct blue, red or dull tones in the skin.

Collection Conceal and Light Like a Pro

Your Style Your Mood

Something I haven’t seen before, this palette contains two mini palettes for an emerald or a plum smoky eye. There’s a mixture of shimmer and matte shades to play with and they’re all netural enough to mix and match.

Collection Your Style Your Mood Palette

Face The Day

My favourite of the bunch, this is a simple palette with everything in it to keep you made up for the day. There’s a huge illuminator, a bronzer and blush, then four shimmer eyeshadow shades spanning from a daytime nude to an evening smoky. I imagine that this will be one of the most popular pieces from the collection.

Collection Face the Day Palette

Alongside a bounty of make-up, I was delighted with my first ever pieces from Boohoo. As Lovebox was the first festival I’d been to I wanted to be a complete hippy princess for the day so I opted for the Becca Batwing Border Smock dress and this little tasselled bag. That bag looks tiny but I managed to fit the kitchen sink in there!

Lovebox Boohoo Dress

Me and Tony

To match it up, here’s what I used on my face from Collection…

  • Matt Lip Butter in Crimson Velvet (love these! Really bright and long lasting.)
  • Face the Day Palette
  • Blush and Glow Palette
  • Black Liquid Liner
  • Eye Brow Kit

…plus a set of Peaches No.1 and No.8 lashes.

Lovebox Make-up Collection

My first ever festival was a scream! Thanks so much to Collection for bringing me.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation

Having the quality time with Charlotte was so inspiring. When you hear her speak you realise why her brand is taking over the world the way that it is – she loves women and she genuinely just wants every woman to look the best possible version of themselves. It’s that simple and yet she makes it so utterly quick, fun and glamorous.

Me and Charlotte Tilbury

First on the agenda was an insight into her brand new, upcoming Magic Foundation. Charlotte told us that this product has been 5 years in the making, since before she even had investment into her brand.

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation 2

Her inspiration was the fact that she had never quite found the perfect full coverage foundation and frankly needed it in her kit. She recalled shoots in which she would mix a little bit of everything to make her perfect full base and said that one of two things would happen. Either the full coverage finish would start to cake and dry out as the day went on, needing constant retouching, or the photos would look beautiful but the model in the flesh would have 6 inches of make-up on. These factors in mind, she began working with both skincare and make-up labs to create a formula that delivered a hydrating, full coverage finish and something to give that retouched finish to the everyday girl.

Now that she has it, she says, “I feel like I’ve given birth!”

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation 1

Charlotte’s Magic Foundation is what she describes as a “new generation” hybrid of anti-ageing, full coverage foundation. What she said of existing full coverage foundations seemed true to me too; she finds that they can feel heavy, be drying, pull on the skin and definitely age the skin. Hers is a weightless, easy to buff formula that will flatter every age, skintone and skin concern. And she’s so confident in how great it is that her campaign images are before and after shots, completely unretouched.

Here’s what it covers and treats…

  • Acne and Acne Scarring: minimises the production of sebum after 9 weeks
  • Redness, Rosacea, Discoloration and Melasma: reduces production of melanocytes over tiem
  • Mature skin: smoothes appearances of wrinkles in 1 hour and age spots reduced by 75%

And here’s what’s in it…

  • Laricyl, a concentrated mushroom extract. Charlotte was laughing that this didn’t sound very glamorous but in French medical legend it was sought after as an elixir for longer life. It firms, tightens pores and hydrates the skin.
  • Hyaluronic Filling Spheres to ensure that moisture is retained and the base stays hydrated all day, thus no drying or caking.
  • Vitamin C (VC-IP) for anti-oxidant properties, great for those of us working in the city.
  • An SPF 15.

For best application of Magic Foundation, Charlotte is releasing a brand new Magic Complexion Brush. You can also see her brand new Mini Miracle Eye Wand in this photo, but I’ll tell you about that in my next post…

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Eye Wand

This sits somewhere between the Tom Ford Cream Foundation Brush and the Real Techniques Buffing Brush, both of which I love. What this does is buffs the foundation into the skin, giving a flawless, air-brushed finish. Charlotte says this will work especially well for women with acne or rosacea because it won’t force foundation into the pores. It’s ridiculously soft and doesn’t pull or wipe products across the skin. This is coming out in September also and comes in at £45.

Personally I just think that what Charlotte does so well is listens to the women that use her make-up. I know from working on the shop floor that women love her Light Wonder foundation (which is also lovely for a fresh, dewy complexion) but that lots of women need to team it with added Retoucher (her concealer) to get a fuller coverage finish. I don’t know another brand that acts on feedback quite so personally, on a complete level and with no other motive but to help the women who love it.

I’ll show you my before and after on Instagram very soon!

Charlotte’s Magic Foundation will be available this September at £29.50.

Meeting Bobbi Brown

As part of a completely jam packed week in the UK, Bobbi had invited a group of beauty bloggers for breakfast at the Ham Yard Hotel and I was one of them. She had so much to share with us – collections to show us, a new eyewear range to launch with Liberty – but, most importantly, she simply wanted to tell us her story.

Bobbi Loves London 5

While we all sat on cosy sofas and chairs with healthy breakfast nibbles, Bobbi entered the room and made her way to her own cosy chair at the front. She was absolutely tiny, in sneakers and jeans, and casually strolled through us as one of the girls here to relax for the morning.

Bobbi Loves London 2

Sharing her story with a powerpoint, I was really taken by how personal Bobbi had made her presentation. I don’t know why but I was expecting marketing stories and product based anecdotes, but instead this was literally about her through and through. She showed us everything from high school photos when she wanted to look like Cher and Jackie O, the time she cropped her hair because she loved her mom and she had told her to, and old photos from her first ever shoots. She really wanted to take us on her journey and told us every last detail about her life. What I loved about her was how vocal she was that her success didn’t come overnight. She really reinforced that with time, hard work and drive, you can achieve whatever you wish to.

Bobbi Loves London 4

Initially, she said that her mom had asked her to imagine an ideal world in which she could do whatever she wanted. Without worrying about the how or when, Bobbi said that she would work in make-up. So that was it. Her mother encouraged her to follow her truest dream and so her journey began. She advertised herself in the yellow pages because there was no social media or internet or anything of the sort, and with time she was travelling the world as a make-up artist to some of the biggest artists in the world.

Bobbi Loves London 3

One of her most valuble experiences was making over Jerry Hall in her very early days as a make-up artist. Jerry, she said, was a total lady and very courteous, but simply re-did lots of her make-up afterwards. Bobbi said that she examined what it was that Jerry needed to change and learned from her amendments.

Bobbi Brown Beauty Emergency Kit

Explaining how the brand began, she told us that Bobbi Brown cosmetics stemmed from a lack of neutral lipsticks for all skin tones. She wanted women of every skin tone to have their perfect nude and so she tried her samples on models and friends until she was convinced she had done so.

Bobbi Brown Christmas Palette

She began selling them simply to people around her, until one night that she bumped into a buyer from Bergdorf Goodman at a party. It was decided: Bergdorf Goodman would take the range. Saks then expressed an interest in Bobbi’s line, but she was exclusive to Bergdorf’s and had to tell them no. In the eleventh hour, Bergdorf’s decided that they wouldn’t be stocking her line. “That’s ok”, she told them, “Saks wanted it anyway.” Half an hour later they called her back, and begged her to launch with them as before.

Bobbi Loves London 1

A turning point for Bobbi was when Estee Lauder companies decided to buy her brand. She says that this is what gave her so much time back to spend with her family, her husband and her children.

Something that really struck me during the breakfast was how passionate Bobbi’s team were. Everyone was just so excited to be with her and part of the brand, both her New York team and the London team. She told us about her working space where all foods were healthy (now the breakfast made sense) and clean eating was something that she felt was important for looking after her team. (She did, however, let us into the secret that if you ever needed something sweet you needed simply to raid the cupboard of her PR team!) They use the space in her office to exercise together, to take time out and really look after themselves despite the fast pace of working for such an enormous brand.

A grounded, articulate woman, it was refreshing to hear that someone with such a huge amount of success had simply worked for it. There was no luck, no magic formula, just good old fashioned hard work. I left feeling inspired and totally amazed that I had just been cuddled for a photo with the woman who created a good fifth of my make-up collection.

Bobbi Brown and Me

What an amazing morning and an amazing woman, I love the brand now more than ever!

Ole Henriksen Empower Range

He had such a great energy around him, I’ve always loved the products but he was so passionate and kind that he’s made me love them even more.

Ole Henriksen Empower Range

Ole’s new collection is a clever one. Essentially he’s aiming this at girls that work hard, play hard and don’t always pay the most meticulous attention to their skin that they should. He’s named it Empower because it is made to fit into the busy regime of an empowered woman, ensuring that despite her many responsibilities she fits in some skin TLC. I think this is going to really appeal to young professionals because it is quick and easy but it really works.

When I got to his concept space we sat down for a while and he talked me through the range from his perspective. What I really noticed was his choice of language, it was all so positive. We see so many brands fighting wrinkles or targeting the signs of ageing; Ole simply said that this was for the woman who was starting to notice a few ‘laughter lines’!

EMPOWER Foaming Milk Cleanser, £20

My skin is always on the dry side so I don’t tend to use anything foaming, however this works really well to take my make-up off without leaving my skin tight or dry. I’d use a separate eye make-up remover but use this to get rid of everything else. Ingredients include arctic cloudberry, Nordic cotton and willow bark to protect the skin against free radicals, great for those of us who work in the city.

Ole Henriksen Empower Range Cleanser

EMPOWER Featherweight Moisturiser, £38

Given the heatwave we’ve had for the last few weeks, this really has been a dream to use. The formula is super light, almost like a gel, and melts really quickly into the skin. The lightness of the texture also means that it is very cooling on application, great for calming redness in my case. Use this twice a day all over the face, neck and decolletage, and over time you’ll find a glow to your skin as the white willow bark gently resurfaces it. If you liked Ole’s hydrating moisturiser you’ll get along well with this one. In his own words this is perfect for your ‘night time ritual. Feel the energy of your touch and let the aroma work up as you massage it in.’

Ole Henriksen Empower Range Featherweight Moisturiser

EMPOWER Hydrating Hand Cream, £12

Ole made a really great point when I spoke with him – he said two things that can really give away your age are eyes and hands. For this reason he’s made a cream to absorb quickly, with no stickiness, just to ensure that your hands are fighting the damage of free radicals in the same way that your face is.

Ole Henriksen Empower Range Hand Cream

On another note, once Ole had finished explaining the range to me he asked me if I had any questions whatsoever about my own skin, any brands or anything at all. For me, my skin issue is redness. I’d feel completely confident make-up free if it wasn’t for the redness that can sometimes flare up around my cheeks and nose. For this he told me to use the Invigorating Night Gel and follow with his oil, taking time to massage the oil into areas of redness. I’ll keep you posted on how this works for me.

Ole Henriksen’s EMPOWER collection is available from September from John Lewis. In the meantime, do explore the rest of the range. You can’t go wrong with any of it.

They’re unified in shape – a pointed oval nail – and each come with a glue strong enough to last a full 7 days’ wear. The nail kit includes a file which works really well if you need to take any length off the nails.

Bella Freud: Signature Fragrance

Bella began by discussing her love for Amber. Amber, she said, was all that her mother would wear in her jewellery, and brought back memories of her childhood. She teamed this with Osmanthus and Ylang Ylang, a beautiful flower with a deep, almost sexual scent. This is a known aphrodisiac and gives the fragrance a very feminine heart.

Bella Freud Signature Fragrance 6

To give an edge to the fragrance, Azzi teamed Patchouli with the Amber. This gave the scent a clean, powdery finish. She likened this to a record with a crackle, or the softness of Bella’s voice when she speaks, even when she says something you don’t want to hear!

Bella Freud Signature Fragrance 4

One of the qualities Azzi said she loved about the fragrance was the longevity it left on the skin. This, she said, mirrored the loyalty that Bella showed her friends. Even on the warmest of summer days, I can still smell traces of this by bedtime. It truly does stay.

Bella Freud Signature Fragrance 3

You may know from reading my blog before that Azzi creates bespoke fragrances for individuals. Her clients include the likes of Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Jude Law. Bella and Azzi worked together to create The Bella Freud Parfum collection in 2014, but this new addition is actually the scent that Azzi created personally for Bella, one that she wears every day. Laura asked Bella how she felt about sharing this with the world, but Bella didn’t seem to mind. She said that it would change with the warmth of the skin of each person, and “on me it will only be mine”.

Bella Freud Signature Fragrance

With time for questions at the end, I asked Bella about the bottle. When I first met Azzi I remember she had lots of unusual stories behind some of her fragrances’ bottles and I knew that Bella’s must be the same. She said simply that releasing this fragrance almost felt like an unlocking of herself. The Amber notes were reminiscent of her mother and the front of the bottle features an illustration by her father. Both of Bella’s parents died four years ago, just four days apart, something she remembered as a big shock. Although she didn’t want this to be a sad or cathartic element, she was pleased to have included influences from both.

Bella Freud Signature Fragrance 2

The scent, to me, is powdery, clean and very womanly. It has come to be my confidence boost before a big meeting or presentation; it makes me feel empowered and feminine. There was something so effortlessly striking about Bella – I like to think I capture a bit of her aura every time I wear it.

Bella Freud Signature Fragrance 5

Bella Freud’s signature fragrance is now available at Selfridges.

James Read Express Bronzing Mousse

I am really, really fair and so to develop a golden tan I normally have to apply two layers of even the darkest tans. This one, however, is good to go after just one layer.

Initially, there is a slight guide colour when you apply your tan so that you know what you’re doing and can buff out any lines or patches. It blends really well, not taking ages to work into the skin. After one hour you’ve got enough to colour to feel ready for a night out or work or whatever it is, and after three hours you’re completely golden.

James Read Express Bronzing Mousse

I put this on a few hours before a night out and everyone asked me if I’d had a spray tan. This is unheard of for me so I was really impressed with how much it developed.

In terms of longevity, I’d say you get four perfect days of tan (when you moisturise every evening) but then the great thing is that it exfoliates off easily when you come to do a scrub with your exfoliating gloves. For this reason, topping up is no bother and you don’t go through that awkward patchy phase.

James Read recommends that you exfoliate and thoroughly moisturise before application. I’ve been using two different body lotions that I love – here they are…

Soap and Glory Sugar Crush Body Lotion, £10

Every time I use this I want a cocktail. Have you ever had the Caipirinha in a can from M&S? That’s what it smells like. A light, delicious lotion, this is lovely for all over the body, absorbs quickly without leaving you sticky, and really hydrates the skin. I use this on my legs and arms during the hot weather if I’ve got my skin on show and it just gives you a lovely softness and glow.

Soap and Glory Sugar Crush Body Lotion

Aerin Gardenia Rattan Body Cream, £40

A much richer, more luxurious cream, I save this for post-shave to really replenish the skin. Aerin’s fragrances are all divine (Gardenia Rattan being my favourite) and so this is such a treat. How this differs is that it offers slightly more hydration and the scent of the lotion lingers. It’s great to use under your favourite perfume to layer the two and create your own bespoke scent. These are also amazing gifts because the packaging and tube of lotion itself are just exquisite.

Aerin Gardenia Rattan Body Cream

As with all tans this does have that classic ‘tan’ scent to it so I find that using a fragranced moisturiser really helps to neutralise the scent.

Completely obsessed! I can’t see myself using another tan now for the rest of the summer.

James Read’s Express Mousse is available from Selfridges and costs £30.
